Easily Change WordPress Permalinks

20 Okt 2010

What Are Permalinks?

To put it simply, permalinks, they are URL's that point to a specific blog post, page, or category of a website. This is an example permalink structure: "wpblast.com/category/roundups ".

Permalinks are super important for your blogs Search Engine Optimization. In other words, having a solid permalink structure will help Google and other search engines crawl your site so you can be ranked higher in search results. additionally, they make your post and page titles look better and cleaner.

How do I change them?

Now that you have a basic understanding of permalinks, it's time to change them. By default WordPress lays them out in a format of "wpblast.com/?=123″. This isn't good. It leaves your permalinks looking a little sloppy, is bad for SEO, and it tells your readers nothing about the link.

You can change the default WordPress settings very simply though. Here's how:

1. Click on "Permalinks" under the "Settings" tab in the dashboard sidebar.
2. Check the box titled "Custom Structure".
3. Create the structure you want.

Here are some basic permalink structures:

* Setting it to /%postname% will display the title of your post in the address bar.
* Adding/%category% before /%postname% will add the category in which the post is in before the post title.

I recommend the second structure.

There you have it, you have now changed your permalink structure. Now you have to a more user friendly and search engine efficient structure. This will hopefully greatly improve how your blog is ranked by Google and the other major search engines.
