Google Top 10 - How to Get Your Website On Google's First Page

13 Okt 2010

Let's get the myth out of the way from the get go - there is no guarantee that your webpages would ever get to the first page of Google. I'm just being honest here. If you are looking for the sure thing, be prepared for a futile journey.

However, there are best practices that all SEO practitioners agree upon and this is what this article is all about.

Without further ado, here are 3 steps to getting your website on Google's first page.

1) On-page optimization

You webpage should contain the keyword you want to rank for. Google makes sure that the visitor would get the information they are searching for so scanning through keywords in your content makes sure of this. Also put your keyword in the meta tags like the title, the keywords, and the description.

2) Off-page optimization

All else being equal, off-page is the determining factor if you are going to rank for Google's first page or not. Always assume that your competition also does on-page by default. So in order to outrank your competition, you must better them in off-page optimization.

Off-page optimization is about building backlinks towards the pages of your website, using the keyword you want to rank for as anchor text for those links. So let's say you are trying to rank for the keyword "dog training", every link you create should have a text of "dog training" pointing towards the page about "dog training."

3) Repeat off-page optimization

You don't need to create thousands of backlink. You only need to outdo your competition. So if your competition has 10 backlinks, you need 11. If your competition has 100, you need 101. It's that simple.
