If You Want to Promote Your Site, Make Sure Your Blog Comments Add Value

Commenting on blogs is a well known and well used method of promoting a website or blog, but many website owners and bloggers approach it wrongly and fail to get the true benefit that it can offer.
One of the most common mistakes made when leaving blog comments is failing to ensure that the comment adds value to the blog page it was left on. Banal comments like 'nice post' and 'thanks for the info' do nothing for the subject and the discussion and actually just increase the chances that the webmaster will delete the comment as spam. Blog readers are usually on the look-out for spam comments and will check the list of comments for interesting points or alternative views while ignoring the one-liners.
A rule to remind yourself of whenever you are looking to leave comments is 'if you have nothing to say - say nothing'. Since you leave a link when you leave your comment, the statements you make are advertisements for the website you're promoting. Lacklustre comments will reflect badly on the target website and reduce the chances that anyone will click through and visit.
The ideal comment takes the conversation further and develops the topic, making readers want to click on the target website for more information or a chance that there will be yet more stimulating discussion to be found there. Remember, when promoting a website and looking for traffic, it's real people that you're targeting and they won't visit you unless you give them a good reason.
